Mercy Njuthe is a smallholder farmer in Makima, Kenya. In five years, Mercy has gone from having to send her children to bed hungry, to being the proud owner of a flourishing farm, on which she grows a wide array of fruit and vegetables: papaya, mango and passionfruit, sorghum, maize and chilli. Mary Lomuria Alarilho is a smallholder farmer in Isiolo, Kenya. She is the leader of a farmers' collective, established with ActionAid’s support. Together, the farmers have established a village savings and loan scheme that has meant, for the first time, Mary has been able to invest in the land she farms, which she inherited from her father. She now grows onions, spinach and tomatoes, which she sells at the market.
Beatrice Mwingi is a chicken farmer in Makima, Isiolo. She is the chair of the Makima Improved Chicken Farmers, a Community Based Organisation that she and others founded several years ago. She speaks to the government on behalf of the organisation, and represents the farmers she works with at regional farming forums. Beatrice is a leader and role model for the women in her community, many of whom she mentors and helps to develop their confidence.Read more
